The original name of the company SsangYong Motor sounded like Ha Dong-Hwan, it appeared in 1954, producing jeeps for the US Army.

 

In 1966, the company began to export buses to Brunei, and in 1967 in Vietnam. In addition to the buses, they began producing SUVs, as well as various special-purpose vehicles.

 

The company again changed its name in 1977 when it became the Donga Motor Co., Ltd. The name of SsangYong, which actually means "twin dragons" was adopted in 1988. In the same year it appeared the first series of wagons Korando.

 

The first major trade agreement SsangYong has a deal with Mercedes Benz AG for the purpose of development of the petrol engine in 1992. A year later, the two agreed to a 5% co-investment and technical alliance, which was to develop a car. In July of the same year he was released Musso wagon and a new generation Korando.

 

In 1997 it was released Chairman model, luxury sedan, the first for the company, which previously produced only heavy vehicles. In the same year, a controlling stake in the company was purchased by their friend, the Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motor Company.

 

The company closed in 2000, when Daewoo was forced to sell it, being in a difficult financial situation.

 

After SsangYong was seen by several international car manufacturers, in 2004 51% of SsangYong were bought by a Chinese conglomerate SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation).

 

Their lineup was completed by other models such as the Rexton (2001), the Rodius (2004), Kyron (2005) and Actyon (2006).

 

Ssang Yong becomes KGM.
