Ariel Car History

Ariel Ltd. It is a manufacturer of sports cars, located in Crewkerne, Somerset. This is one of the smallest car manufacturers in the UK, where only 7 people.

 

The company was founded in 1991 as Solocrest Limited, but in 2001 changed its name to Ariel Ltd. as a result of the purchase of the rights to the name in 1999 from the former well-known British manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles.

 

Name Ariel has a great significance in the British automotive history. It has found its origins in Hebrew, and translated as "lion-headed God", but it was believed that the British founders came up with the name, inspired by Shakespeare's play "The Tempest", where the so-called spirit of the air.

 

First achieving the company achieved in 1870 and named it Ariel Ordinary. They became a bike that had two-speed transmission, 48-inch front wheel, and who patented light entirely steel frame. Then, in the early 1900s, of Ariel, one of the first British car companies, it presented to the public two typical roadster. The first was a 1100-pound two-seater, called Ariel Grand Prix Racer, which was powered by a 2325 cc 4-cylinder engine. Immediately after that Ariel abandoned car development plans and moved to motorcycles. During the first half of the 20th century, Ariel has established itself among the British motorcycle manufacturers. Among several successful models of motorcycles of this brand, we recall: Model E Super Sports, Red Hunter, Square 4 and Arrow.

 

Returning to the current Ariel Ltd., the company has made a name for himself in 2000 when it introduced the world's first exoskeletal car called Atom. The car had a visible skeleton work on the basis of a cylindrical chassis and engine Rover K-series. Since he did not have the body and the roof, the car was very light (about 1,000 kg) and had a rapid acceleration.

 

Ariel Atom 2 was an improved version of the first Atom, but different 2.0-liter Honda VTEC and a 6-speed manual transmission Honda. Ariel Atom's success soared after the Atom 2 took part in the popular British car show Top Gear.
