Range Rover History

June 17, 1970 is considered to be the beginning of production Range Rover. The first cars were intended for journalistic test drives and demonstrations to the general public. How was the legend born?

 

All first Range Rover cars had three doors. As the commercial department of Range Rover, so many developers have criticized this option. But after security tests were conducted, it was decided to stop on this option. This model is structurally much stronger than the version with four doors. In addition, it was not subject to US import restrictions, which were based on very stringent requirements for passive safety. In connection with such a requirement on all cars, the firms first intended to install disc brakes on all wheels. In addition, it was decided to install hoods made of steel, not aluminum. Of course, such hoods were heavier, but also much stronger. The first Range Rover cars were fitted with an American Buick engine. This engine became famous for its unpretentiousness and power.

 

  From here it becomes clear that the new car from the very beginning was developed with an eye on similar American cars and with the calculation on the American market. From the very beginning, they even wanted to abandon the permanent all-wheel drive standard for Land Rover cars and install a plug-in front axle in the car. In this decision, you could see some similarity in the front suspension of the Ford Bronco. But during the preliminary tests it became clear that the rear axle badly "holds" a lot of effort. If a large torque is transmitted from the V8 engine to one axle, this will significantly reduce the reliability of the transmission.

 

In the new development, a long-stroke suspension was used on shock absorbers and coil springs. On the one hand, this design provided a guarantee that the car will be able to overcome any impassability - in the suspension allowed quite large fluctuations of the transverse axes. On the other hand, comfort of movement was provided on roads with a hard surface.

 

Back in 1972, a sample of the Range Rover car with four doors was developed. But this car was not released serially. And in 1980 the firm received an offer from the Swiss engineer Peter Monteverdi. He offered his own version of the body with four doors. Given all the market requirements of the time, the company accepted this offer. In 1981, there were already released about 50 Range Rover Monteverdi cars. In these cars, leather interiors were installed. They were also equipped with air conditioning. The commercial success of this car was quite large. This allowed the company to develop its own version of the body with four doors. The car with this body is called the Range Rover Classic. The release lasted until 1995.

 

The turning points in the history of the steel brand were 1980 and 1981. During these years a lot of serious changes were made to the car's design. The appearance of the Range Rover car was finally formed.

In the car was installed a powerful branded engine with an orbit 3.5 liters. It was fitted with the Lucas L injection system or two Zenith / Stromberg / Solex carburetors. Very often the air suspension control unit and the on-board computer fail. On the Classic model the air suspension is simply replaced with a conventional one.
