Panoz Auto Development is a US brand of high-performance automobiles, founded in 1989 by Dan Panoz, the son of pharmaceutical tycoon and a big lump of motorsport Don Panoz. The company is located in Braselton, GA.
In 1989, Frank Costin founded a new car company, Panoz, a subsidiary of Irish Chassis Design Co.
The main idea of the creators was to modernize the Spartan and other sports cars of the 60s with the latest technology.
Panoz debuted in GT racing in 1997 with the Panoz Esperante GTR-1.
The GTR-1 version, with its long front and short rear, differs from cars of the time, such as the Viper, in its unique design.
The chassis of the car is a carbon fiber monocoque designed by Reynard. Despite the rear-wheel drive, the sporty performance was excellent thanks to the double wishbone suspension.
The 6. 0-liter V80HV engine, designed by the Jack Roush Racing team, which is second only to Ford Works in Nascar and SCCA Trans-Am racing, is capable of producing 600 hp.
The dry-sump engine is based on a small Ford unit, but is made entirely of aluminum and has a special injection system, different from the engines used in Nascar.
The gearbox is located at the rear and is integrated with the axle.
Since 1999, the Panoz GTR-1 called the Esperante, and chassis production passed into the hands of the company. This car remains a classic of motorsport.
