AUSTIN HEALEY

History of Austin Cars

Some AUSTIN Car Service Manual, Owner Manuals PDF & Wiring Diagrams above the page - Gipsy, MG Metro, G VG, A40.

AUSTIN was founded in 1905.

The Austin Maxi, introduced in 1969, became an iconic car in the history of the British car industry.

It was a mid-size family five-door hatchback with front-wheel drive and a longitudinal four-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft.

Engines with a volume of 1.5 and 1.75 liters provided the car with decent technical characteristics for its time.

The development of the historic car called Austin Maxi began in 1965 at the factories of the British Motor Corporation.

This was the last car created under the leadership of the legendary designer Alec Issigonis, who had previously become famous for creating the famous Mini.

After the merger of British Motor Corporation with Leyland, the car became the first product of the new British Leyland group.

The name "Maxi" was chosen to remind buyers of the Mini, released ten years earlier.

Despite the spacious interior, functionality and innovative design, sales of the Austin Maxi did not live up to expectations.

Over 12 years of production, less than 500,000 units were sold. The company's main strategic mistake was that the Maxi remained the only hatchback in the model line.

In 1979, the top modification Maxi 1750 HLS appeared, featuring a wooden dashboard trim and an updated design.

Production of the 1500 model was discontinued, and only three versions remained in the line: 1750, 1750 HL and 1750 HLS. An automatic four-speed gearbox became available in 1974.

In 1977, the Austin brand was dropped from the car's name, and the model became known simply as the Maxi.
